Special Education Teacher

POSITION SUMMARY:

Elevation Ability Services is a Facility School for students with developmental disabilities ages 6-14. We serve students from school districts in the Denver Metro and Front Range. Teaching candidates must have experience or the flexibility to work with a diverse student population. The Special Education Teacher must be licensed in Special Education. In addition, Elevation Ability Services is seeking someone who has a background with students who have intensive cognitive, behavioral and academic needs. This teacher will perform effective teaching methods to ensure student success and promote an exemplary educational program which fosters achievement for all students. Must be able to manage a team including paraprofessionals. Develops and promotes good relations among community and school learners. Must be trained (or willing to be trained) in IEP software and Safety Care.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

· Strong knowledge of content area, teaching methods, learning styles and educational research related to learners with all types of special needs.

· Demonstrate an understanding of the scope and sequence of a special education curriculum.

· Strong classroom management, communication, organization and planning skills.

· Experience in developing and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs).

· Knowledge of both formal and informal diagnostic assessments for students with a variety of learning difficulties.

· Demonstrate knowledge in literacy and numeracy intervention programs.

· Experience in administration and interpretation of standardized and informal special education assessments.

· Demonstrate problem-solving skills through collaborative work with students, teachers, parents and administrators.

· Participate collaboratively in teaching teams to design curriculum and assessments.

· Experience in managing cases including regular communication with parents and staff.

· Ability to align curriculum and assessments with Colorado Content Standards.

· Positively impact achievement and differentiate instruction based on the needs of the students by supporting programs designed to increase student achievement

· Perform other duties as may be assigned by the building principal or Special Education Director in accordance with School policies.

· Collect, record, and summarize data on observable student behavior.

· Assist with parent and caregiver training in line with student’s individualized treatment and behavior reduction protocols.

· Utilize safe & appropriate handling procedures when working with students.

· Maintain student confidentiality.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

· Demonstrate knowledge and skill regarding the components of effective instruction.

· Demonstrate knowledge of content and teaching methods in areas of the teaching assignment.

· Demonstrate knowledge of developmental needs of students.

· Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills.

· Evidence of ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative relationships with school personnel, students and parents.

· Demonstrate understanding and empathy necessary for working with students.

· Ability to accept constructive feedback and develop knowledge and skill sets accordingly.

· Effective time management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks at one time

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with students, co-workers, supervisors, and community member

· Ability to adhere to organizational policies and procedures and abide by code of ethics as indicated by Colorado Department of Education, Colorado Department of Human Services, and the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (if applicable)

· Commitment to maintain student confidentiality and adhere to FERPA laws

· Commitment to ongoing training and development as it relates to professional development, ethics, and technology, and training in order to perform job responsibilities to required standard.

· Ability to interpret and implement educational protocols.

· Maintain a professional appearance with regard to clothing, grooming, hair, and make-up.

BASIC & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

Must be able to assume and maintain a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, crawling, sitting, standing) for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to sit on the floor or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must have manual dexterity to perform specific computer and electronic device functions for data collection.
  • Must be able to receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Must have visual acuity to read and comprehend written communication through computer, electronic devices, and paper means.
  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License & insurance in good standing

QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:

  • Required: 1 year teaching special education in a public school or facility school setting
  • Preferred: 3-5 years experience teaching children ages 0-21 providing in a classroom or 1:1 setting; experience implementing the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis.

EDUCATION:

Required:

· The Special Education Teacher shall hold a valid Colorado license with approved endorsement as a teacher of the category of handicap being taught.

· Bachelor’s degree or higher required from an accredited university or college.

· Completed a state approved Teacher Preparation Program, participation in a Teacher in Resident Program or participation in an Alternative Teacher License program.

· Demonstrates competency by one of the following means:

· Pass the Place or Praxis test.

· Pass the Veteran Teacher HOUSSE, held a license on or before July 1, 2006 and has had one or more years of completed teaching experience.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

· Employment Supervisor: Special Education Director

· Supervisees: Paraprofessionals

RELATED TRAINING:

  • Responsible for completing and maintaining all required certifications and trainings once employed including, but not limited to: CPR, Fingerprinting & Background Checks, and other company in-services and trainings as directed by employment supervisor.

· Safety Care Training within first 90 days of employment

· MANE Training

$50,000-$70,000.00
