Position Purpose

Under the supervision of Recreation Supervisor or Coordinator, manage City of Longmont Aquatic facilities, programs, lifeguards, swim instructors, and front desk staff. Assist with facility staffing, maintenance and general operation of the indoor and/or outdoor swimming pools to ensure a safe, fun and secure environment.

Essential Duties

Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.

  • Lead, manage, and assist Lead Lifeguards, Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, WSI’s, Concessionaires, and Front Desk staff.
  • Assist with training and evaluating of all aquatic and concessionaire staff.
  • Promote and participate in a safety-conscious environment.
  • Ensure that employees report to work on time and are placed in their proper assignments, contact replacements, and complete employee counsel forms as needed.
  • Oversee the aquatic facility and programs in the absence of the Aquatic Coordinator or Supervisor.
  • Handles and/or reports any problems in staff relationships to the Aquatic Coordinator or supervisor.
  • Oversee and take chemical readings and make accurate, safe and necessary adjustments. Keep chemical and filter room logs current and accurate and communicate to supervisors when appropriate.
  • Enforce policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of staff and patrons using the pool and maintain proper records and reports for adherence at all applicable Health Codes.
  • Assist visitors or staff in non-emergency and emergency situations.
  • Complete, submit, review and maintain variety of forms and files: incident, accident, and facility safety checks.
  • Can defuse conflict situations professionally resulting in a positive resolution with staff, supervisors and patrons.
  • Make and/or maintain cordial and professional public relations with patrons.
  • Conduct consistent walk-throughs of pool facility.
  • Observe, follow and enforce established policies and procedures regarding staff, facility, program, and safety protocols in the daily conduct of the job.
  • Perform and oversee custodial maintenance of the facility including trash removal, snow removal, and the cleaning of pool areas, restrooms, locker rooms, and other patron and staff areas.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate attendance and daily and monthly cash reports at the pools.
  • Assist in planning for, attend and participate in staff trainings.
  • Adhere to and perform open and closing procedures for City swimming pools
  • Assist in Administrative tasks including: time sheet accuracy and completeness, distribution of schedules, and front desk coverage
  • Manage inventory of lifeguard equipment, fitness and safety supplies, pool chemicals, etc.
  • Promote programs within the organization.

Performs essential duties and additional tasks in a manner which enhances City Attributes.

Additional Duties

  • Teach swim lessons, lifeguard and perform front desk duties as needed or assigned.
  • Custodial maintenance of the facility.
  • Maintain efficient use of City resources.

Perform other duties as assigned and required.

May be reassigned to other duties, responsibilities, work hours, and positions during emergency and recovery conditions, as determined by City Manager or delegated by the City Manager.

Reporting Relationships

Supervision Received: Under the direction of the Recreation Program Coordinator or Recreation Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised (direct reports and/or direct staffing decisions): Lifeguards, Lead Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, Front Desk, Concessionaires, Assistant Pool Managers

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education and Experience:

Previous pool management experience or any combination of lifeguard and/or swim instruction experience, plus supervisory experience or demonstrated skills or training in leadership or supervision. Prior customer service experience. Experience in pool chemistry and pool maintenance preferred.

Knowledge of:

American Red Cross policies and procedures, philosophies, lifeguarding methods and techniques, organizational procedures, pool chemistry testing and adjustment procedures.

Ability to:

Perform all lifeguard, swim instructor, and front desk, duties and expectations. Multi-task supervision of staff and aquatic programs. Communicate instructions orally and in writing, clearly and precisely; follow policies and procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, staff and supervisors; analyze and correct facility safety hazards; write incident and accident reports and perform follow-ups as necessary; learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures; assist in the development of staff. Work independently and make sound decisions. Remain calm and professional when handling irate or irrational patrons and/or staff.

Additional requirements:

  • Current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguard, including Waterfront certifications, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, Certified Pool Operator, Lifeguard Instructor certifications are desired. Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License.

Equipment Used

Safety equipment and materials necessary for pool maintenance, lifeguarding and staff training, including but not limited to face masks, gloves, safety glasses, rescue tubes, whistles, AED, megaphone and other communication devices. Cash drawer, calculator, PC computer including current recreation registration software, Microsoft Word, and Excel. Custodial tools and cleaning supplies.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Work conditions are performed either indoors or outdoors and involves exposure to hot and cold temperatures, high humidity, direct sun and/or moderate to loud background noise. Work requires frequent use of fingers and hands, walking and standing, hearing, speaking, problem solving, math, verbal and written communication and customer contact, handling multiple tasks with frequent interruptions, custodial duties, slippery/uneven walking surfaces, working alone or working closely with others, moderate lifting of 50 lb. chemical bags, bending/stooping, and kneeling and driving a City vehicle for errands.
