TPWD MISSION
To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Student Internship Program introduces interested college students to career opportunities to gain practical experience and training in natural and cultural resource fields. Under the direct supervision of the Wildlife Regional Fire Program Specialist, this intern position will assist with installing and maintaining fire breaks that include mowing, chainsaw cutting, leaf blowing, and herbicide spraying. Assist with fire vegetative monitoring protocol including, maintaining points, taking measurement of the duff layer, identifying species, measuring canopy density and vegetation height, etc. Assist with conducting prescribed fires on Wildlife Management Area (WMA), private lands, and/or partner lands. Assist with brush pile burning on WMAs. Maintain fire equipment. Assist WMA Managers with various land management tasks such as invasive species removal, fencing, sign posting, mowing, etc. Assist District Biologists with deer survey counts, dove field posting, etc. Perform required administrative duties commensurate with state employment. Assist with maintaining state buildings, structures, and vehicles.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months;
Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application;
Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or “Pass” on a Pass/Fail system.
Experience:
None required.
Licensure:
Must be at least 18 years old;
Applicant must possess a valid State driver’s license.
NOTE: Retention of internship contingent upon maintaining required license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Current undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in an accredited college or university in a Wildlife Science or closely related Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program.
Experience:
Experience in safe equipment operation and maintenance (including but not limited to: tractors and associated implements, ATVs/UTVs, four-wheel drive, and off-road vehicles, hauling trailers).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of safe equipment operation and maintenance (including but not limited to: tractors and associated implements, trailers, ATVs/UTVs, & four-wheel vehicles);
Knowledge of prescribed burns;
Knowledge of field vegetation survey techniques;
Knowledge of Texas wildlife habitats and species;
Skill in effective verbal and written communication;
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers or leaders while work on projects or assignments.

Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;
Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday;
Required to work on holidays, weekends and hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as necessary;
Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;
Required to walk and work in soft unstable soils;
May be required to travel 50-75% day travel with some overnight stays. A state vehicle will be available to travel to and from field. Lodging and food costs for approved overnight travel are reimbursable;
Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;
